General Questions
A collection of common questions we get about the program.
Is this the same as Fresno State’s old wrestling team?
No. Fresno State’s NCAA wrestling program was discontinued after the 2020–21 season.
Will Fresno State NCAA Division I Wrestling ever return?
That would be a question for Fresno State Athletics.
Is Fresno State NCWA Wrestling a club team?
Yes. Officially, we are the Fresno State Wrestling Club, a competitive club sport recognized through Fresno State Club Sports.
Do you give scholarships?
No. As a student-run and volunteer-coached program, we do not offer athletic scholarships.
Do you run wrestling camps?
No, not at this time. We are exploring opportunities to offer wrestling camps in the future.
Can I attend your home competitions?
Yes! All of our home competitions are free to attend and open to the public. Check our Schedule page for upcoming home events, and keep in mind that seating may be limited.
Why don’t you host duals at the Save Mart Center?
Cost. As a club program, we would be responsible for renting the facility ourselves, which currently costs approximately $20,000 per day.
Where Can I buy merch?
We will advertise on our social media pages when we open up a team store or team orders.
Joining
the Team
Common questions we get from students interested in joining the team.
Can I just be a practice member?
Yes. Students are welcome to join as practice members without competing.
Do I need prior wrestling experience?
Prior wrestling or grappling experience is highly recommended. If you're completely new to the sport, be prepared to invest significant extra time and effort to catch up. Wrestling has a steep learning curve, and it may not be the right fit for everyone.
Are all practices mandatory?
No. Our practice attendance has more flexibility than most programs, but our team members are still expected to attend regularly.
Do you have off-season training?
No. We may have open room, but no structured training as a team during the off-season.
What gear do I need?
Wrestling shoes, headgear, and practice attire are required. Competition singlets, warm-ups, and other team gear are provided.
Is there a membership fee?
Yes. Beginning with the 2027–28 season, team members will have a $600 fundraising requirement, with the option to buy out of fundraising. These funds help cover NCWA membership, tournament entry fees, airfare, and other team operating costs throughout the season.
Membership requirements may be adjusted for athletes who do not plan to compete at higher-cost travel events.
Student-athletes who committed to the program under the 2026–27 membership model will be grandfathered into that structure.
What costs are associated with being on the team?
We work to keep participation as affordable as possible through fundraising, grants, and university support. However, team members may still be responsible for certain expenses, such as meals, personal spending, or optional activities during team travel.
Recruiting
Common questions we get from prospective students interested in Fresno State.
How do I get recruited?
Unlike varsity programs, we don't conduct traditional scholarship recruiting. If you're interested in attending Fresno State, we encourage you to reach out to our coaching staff as early as possible. Early communication gives us the opportunity to answer your questions, learn about your goals, and stay connected throughout your college decision process.
Do I need to be recruited to join the team?
No. Because we're a club program, prospective students do not need a formal recruiting offer to join.
Can graduate students compete?
Yes. Graduate students may compete if they meet NCWA eligibility requirements.
Can I visit campus?
Yes. We periodically host designated campus and facility tour days for prospective student-athletes. If you're unable to attend one of those dates, you're welcome to visit Fresno State on your own—just let us know in advance, and we'll do our best to arrange access to our facilities and answer any questions you may have.
Note: Facility tours are temporarily paused while we evaluate future tour opportunities. Prospective students are still welcome to visit Fresno State's campus independently.
Can I practice with the team before I'm admitted to Fresno State?
We're currently exploring opportunities to host designated recruit practice days in the future. Stay tuned for updates.
