Aguilar Dominates as Fresno State Squad Wraps Up West Coast Conference Championships
BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. — February 24, 2018
With just four athletes competing, the Fresno State Wrestling Club kept things small but meaningful at the 2018 NCWA West Coast Conference Championships on February 24. Facing a deep field of teams including Arizona, BYU, CSU Northridge, Sacramento State, Dixie State, and more, the Bulldogs leaned on experience and grit in one of their toughest regional outings to date.
Tournament Recap
149 lbs – Llimy Garcia
Garcia opened his tournament with a tough draw against Phillip Grajeda (Arizona), falling in the opening round. In the consolation bracket, he faced Paul Adkisson (UCLA) in a rematch from the state tournament, but couldn’t find the momentum and was eliminated from competition.
174 lbs – Emmanuel Zepeda
Seeded second, Zepeda started his day with a fall over Samuel Lee (UCLA) to advance to the semifinals. Against Karson Christiansen (BYU), Zepeda was caught late in a scramble and pinned, dropping him into the consolation bracket. He then fell to Tanner Turnbow (Arizona) before finishing strong with a pin over Seamus Sullivan (CSUN) to take 5th place overall.
136 lbs – Yuritzi Boyzo
Boyzo opened with a loss to Arianna McDonald (UCSB), but bounced back in her second bout with a win over Jessica Luna (CSUN). She closed out her day with a competitive match against Kristen Yazzie (Utah State), coming up short but gaining valuable mat time ahead of nationals.
143 lbs – Rossana Aguilar
Aguilar looked sharp in her new weight class, tech falling Angelica Galvez (CSUN) and pinning Ally Seaton (Utah State) to go undefeated on the day. Her performance continues a dominant run heading into nationals, where she’ll look to add to her All-American accolades.
