Bulldogs Fall to Menlo Oak Squad in Regular-Season Dual Finale

ATHERTON, Calif. — February 8, 2025

The Fresno State Wrestling Club traveled to Atherton on February 8 for a dual against the Menlo Oak Squad, Menlo College's developmental NCWA program. Following a demanding stretch of dual competition throughout the season, both teams entered the matchup without several key starters, forcing lineup adjustments throughout the evening.

Wrestlers from both sides moved up in weight to create additional match opportunities, resulting in a dual that looked much different than either team's typical lineup. Fresno State's Nicholas Needham, William Wareham, and Damian Galvan were among the Bulldogs who competed above their normal weight classes, while Menlo also shifted wrestlers throughout its lineup.

Despite the adjustments, the Bulldogs battled throughout the dual. Several matches remained competitive, including narrow decision losses by Kyler Rodriguez and Wareham. However, Menlo used its depth and home-mat advantage to pull away throughout the evening and secure a 47-3 victory.

The lone victory for Fresno State came at heavyweight, where Michael Brent earned a 9-3 decision over Luca O'Neil. Brent's win prevented the shutout and provided a bright spot for the Bulldogs as they wrapped up their regular-season dual schedule.

“After a heavy load of duals, the team came in exhausted," said Head Coach Jovany Gonzalez. “We had many starters missing, and weights filled any way we could. It's been a long season. It feels like we're limping our way to the finish line. We will take some time off and rest, and hopefully get healthier as we push for the postseason."

Next Up

Fresno State returns to action on March 1, 2025, when the Bulldogs compete at the NCWA California State Championships. The event will serve as the final tune-up before the NCWA postseason begins later in the month.
