ATHERTON, Calif. – November 5, 2023

The Fresno State Wrestling Club women’s squad competed Sunday at the Menlo Women’s Open, facing a nationally competitive field in one of the premier women’s collegiate tournaments on the West Coast.

The tournament featured programs from across the country, including Menlo College, Southern Oregon University, Life University, Texas Wesleyan University, the University of Providence, Vanguard University, Missouri Baptist University, Umpqua Community College, Southwestern Oregon Community College, and Westcliff University.

RECAP

136lbs – Alexus Chavira
Chavira opened the tournament against Piper Hall (Vanguard University). After dropping into the consolation bracket, she continued to compete against experienced opposition before her tournament concluded with a match against Kaianne Sabagala (University of Providence).

136lbs – Ebony Cardenas
Cardenas faced a difficult opening-round matchup against Zaynah McBryde (Life University). She moved into the consolation bracket and closed out her tournament against Ce`ariah Sands (Menlo College), gaining valuable mat time against nationally competitive opponents.

Interim head coach Jovany Gonzalez acknowledged the level of competition and the short turnaround between events. “It’s a tough tournament,” Gonzalez said. “We didn’t even practice freestyle during the lead-up. If anything, this weekend was a good opportunity to get the first-match nerves out before we head into conference action.”
