Bulldogs Open New Season with Grit at San Francisco State Open

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – November 1, 2015

The Fresno State Wrestling Club officially launched its 2015–16 season at the 48th Annual San Francisco State University Community College/College Open, hosted inside The Swamp at the Don Nasser Family Plaza. With both returning leaders and new faces, the Bulldogs entered the season with more support, more structure, and a bigger vision. Their first test was no soft opener—it was one of California’s deepest tournaments, featuring NCAA Division I programs like CSU Bakersfield and Cal Poly, strong NAIA teams, and top-tier community colleges from across the state.

The team battled through a challenging day on the mat, collecting important early-season mat time and a dose of reality that sets the tone for the season ahead.

Tournament Recap

125 lbs – Eric Loredo
Loredo made his season debut with a first-round bye, then met Justin Osuna (Skyline College) in the second round. Osuna caught Loredo early, resulting in a fall. Loredo advanced in the consolation bracket via bye, where he then faced Brandon Vu (San Francisco State), falling 16–1 in a tough technical bout.

133 lbs – Hugo Rodriguez
Rodriguez had a difficult draw in his first match of the season, taking on Adrian Panduro, a redshirt freshman from CSU Bakersfield. Panduro secured the fall, sending Rodriguez to the consolation bracket. There, he met Jorge Pinedo (Mt. San Antonio College), who also ended the match by fall.

141 lbs – Alejandro Politron
After a bye in the first round, Politron found himself facing Russell Rohlfing (CSU Bakersfield). Politron battled, but ultimately lost by fall. In the consolations, he took on Trevor Bislano (Sierra College), who ended the match by fall as well. Politron gained firsthand experience against high-end competition right out of the gate.

149 lbs – Jesus Medina
Now competing at a leaner weight, Medina debuted at 149 pounds and drew Jacob Thalin (CSU Bakersfield) in the opening round. Thalin secured a fall, but Medina bounced back in the wrestlebacks with a dominant 15–1 major decision over Kade Nestingen (Cuesta College). In the next round, Medina faced teammate Francisco Cardenas, dropping the bout by fall in a competitive team matchup.

184 lbs – David Gallardo
Gallardo opened the day against Mark Penyacsek (CSU Bakersfield), losing by fall to the D1 redshirt. In the consolation bracket, Gallardo looked sharp, earning a 15–0 technical fall over Brandon Aviles (East Los Angeles College). Unfortunately, he was forced to injury default out of the tournament before his next match.
