Fresno State Battles Through Deep Field at 2015 Bill Musick Open
FRESNO, Calif. – November 7, 2015
The Fresno State Wrestling Club took the mats once again this weekend at the 2015 Bill Musick Open, hosted by Fresno City College. Just one week removed from the season opener at San Francisco State, the Bulldogs continued to take on the toughest early-season schedule they could find. With redshirts from CSU Bakersfield, top talent from Cal Poly, and a wave of All-State community college wrestlers in the field, this tournament was no exception.
Fresno State brought a mixture of returning veterans and young athletes looking to make their mark. Though wins were hard to come by, the effort and willingness to compete were evident across the board. The Bulldogs continue to grow through adversity as the season picks up momentum.
Tournament Recap
125 lbs – Eric Loredo
Loredo showed toughness in his second tournament of the year. After a hard-fought first-round match, he entered the consolation bracket where he suffered a blow to the head that knocked him out of the bout. He was forced to medically forfeit the remainder of the tournament.
125 lbs – Hugo Rodriguez
Rodriguez continued to gain mat time, wrestling hard in both of his matches before being eliminated from the tournament with an 0-2 finish.
141 lbs – Alejandro Politron
For the second week in a row, Politron drew Russell Rohlfing (CSU Bakersfield) in the opening round, one of the top redshirts in the tournament. After dropping that bout, Politron entered the consolation bracket but couldn’t find his rhythm, falling in his second match to close the day.
149 lbs – Christopher Dela Cruz
Dela Cruz got his first action of the season in a tough bracket. He battled but was unable to find a win, finishing 0-2 on the day.
157 lbs – Greg Garrison
Garrison showed flashes of potential, opening with a match against CSU Bakersfield where he was outmatched but competitive. He bounced back with a solid victory in the wrestlebacks before losing in his third match to end his day with a 1-2 performance.
165 lbs – Davit Gevorgyan (Unattached)
Redshirting this season, Gevorgyan bumped up a weight class and wrestled as unattached. He opened against a tough Cal Poly wrestler, holding his own early before the size gap began to wear him down. In the consolations, he again controlled the action early but ultimately couldn’t overcome the physicality at the heavier weight. Despite the result, it was a gritty showing and valuable experience for the returning standout.
174 lbs – Mason Temple
Temple also moved up a weight class and got off to a strong start, winning his opening match before running into a tough second-round opponent. After the loss, he was forced to medically withdraw from the rest of the tournament.
184 lbs – Cameron MacLeod
MacLeod opened with a loss and unfortunately could not continue the rest of the tournament due to injury, medically forfeiting out of the bracket.
285 lbs – Francisco Gallardo
Gallardo continued to gain experience at heavyweight but couldn’t break through in the win column, finishing 0-2 on the day.
285 lbs – Jesus Marez-Lopez
Marez-Lopez also competed at heavyweight, wrestling hard in both of his matches. While the wins didn’t come this time, he continues to be a steady presence in the upper weight class.
