Bulldogs Qualify Four for NCWA National Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — February 26, 2022

The Fresno State Wrestling Club opened postseason competition at the NCWA West Coast Conference Championships in Las Vegas, competing against a conference field that included Ottawa University (Arizona), UNLV, Grand Canyon, Colorado State, USC, Dixie State, and San Jose State.

The Bulldogs finished fourth in the team standings with 66 points while qualifying all four wrestlers for the NCWA National Championships. Leading the way was Nicholas Martino, who captured the 165-pound conference title and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after recording three falls in three matches. Andres Cardona added a runner-up finish at 174 pounds, while Luis Jauregui placed third at 184 pounds and Ricardo Jauregui finished fourth at 235 pounds to complete Fresno State's group of National qualifiers.

Tournament Recap

165 lbs — Nicholas Martino (Champion, National Qualifier)
Martino opened the tournament with a fall over Jacob Bernal (Ottawa), followed by a fall over Alexander Agnew (Colorado State) in the semifinals. He completed his championship run with a fall over Zachary Loutzenhiser (Ottawa) in the finals to earn the conference title and Most Outstanding Wrestler honors.

174 lbs — Andres Cardona (2nd Place, National Qualifier)
After receiving a first-round bye, Cardona pinned Conner Frazier (UNLV) in the semifinals before falling to Julian Kennedy (Ottawa) in the championship match.

184 lbs — Luis Jauregui (3rd Place, National Qualifier)
Following a first-round bye, Jauregui fell to Isaiah Auman (Ottawa) in the semifinals. He rebounded with falls over Julian Gonzalez (Ottawa) and Brett Barefoot (UNLV) to claim third place.

235 lbs — Ricardo Jauregui (4th Place, National Qualifier)
After receiving a first-round bye, Jauregui dropped a 4-0 decision to Blaine Nye (Colorado State) before bouncing back with a fall over Angel De Anda (Ottawa). He concluded the tournament with a loss to Fabricio Martinez (UNLV) in the third-place match.
