Fresno State Wrestlers Take on Menlo and Vanguard Despite Flu-Depleted Lineup

Costa Mesa, Calif. — December 6, 2025

The Bulldogs entered Saturday’s tri-dual prepared to take on NCAA Division II opponents Menlo College and Vanguard University. What wasn’t expected was a flu outbreak that swept through the Bulldog wrestling room, leaving the roster severely depleted and forcing difficult discussions about withdrawing from the event.

Just as the program was ready to call in and cancel, two athletes — Emmanuel Plascencia and Josiah Rowland — stepped up and made it clear they still wanted to compete, even if it meant facing NCAA D2 athletes on their own. Their commitment kept Fresno State on the mats.

Coach Jovany Gonzalez praised the pair for their mindset and leadership.

“Our room got hit hard with the flu and we were close to calling off the event, but when Emmanuel and Josiah told us they still wanted to compete, that made the decision easy. They wanted the test. Menlo has guys who will be on the podium in March, so this was a great chance to see exactly where the standard is. It’s only going to get tougher from here, and getting that honest look now helps us dial in what we need to improve.”

Fresno State faced nationally ranked individuals throughout the meet, giving Plascencia and Rowland valuable experience and a firsthand look at the level of wrestling they aspire to reach as the program continues to grow.

Though the Bulldogs were short-handed, the coaching staff emphasized that the willingness to compete — despite circumstances — reflects the culture Fresno State is building.

With a month to reset, recover, and get back into rhythm, the Bulldogs will return to action on January 4, 2026, traveling to McMinnville, Oregon where select individuals will compete at the Mat Cat Open. The event will provide a fresh start to the new year and another opportunity for those athletes to measure their progress against strong competition.
