Fresno State Wrestling Club Makes Debut at Roadrunner Open

Fresno, Calif. — November 17, 2013

The Fresno State Wrestling Club officially entered the collegiate wrestling scene this past weekend, making its first appearance at the Roadrunner Open on November 11, 2017, held at Selland Arena and hosted by CSU Bakersfield. The event featured a strong NCAA Division I field, offering a valuable opportunity for the young program to take its first competitive steps.

Representing the Bulldogs at 157 pounds, Mason Temple was the first club member to compete. Though he did not advance in the bracket, Temple wrestled with grit against NCAA D-I opponents and helped set the tone for the kind of toughness the club hopes to build on moving forward.

While Temple competed, the rest of the club participated in a different way—through community service. Members gave back to the wrestling community by volunteering at the event, assisting with table work, scorekeeping, and helping ensure the tournament ran smoothly. Their efforts demonstrated the club’s commitment not just to competition, but to supporting the sport at all levels.

The outing also provided valuable exposure for the program. Founding President Jovany Gonzalez had the opportunity to meet former NCAA Fresno State Head Coach Dennis DeLiddo, sharing the club’s mission and long-term goals. The weekend marked an important milestone as the team looks to grow in numbers and competition in the years ahead.

Though early in its journey, the weekend marked a major milestone for the program. With its first tournament now in the books, the Fresno State Wrestling Club looks ahead to future opportunities to grow in both competition and presence within the wrestling community.
