Mejia Represents Fresno State Wrestling Club at Bill Musick Memorial Open
FRESNO, Calif. — November 9, 2019
The Bill Musick Memorial Open marked the first tournament of the season for Fresno State's reinstated NCAA Division I wrestling team, as a new group of Bulldogs took the mat in search of starting spots and a place in the lineup.
Mixed in with the Fresno State singlets was one that looked a little different.
For years, the Fresno State Wrestling Club had regularly competed at the Bill Musick Memorial Open, making the club's singlet a familiar sight at the tournament. This year, however, it stood apart from the university's new NCAA Division I uniforms.
Competing at 141 pounds, Steve Mejia represented the Fresno State Wrestling Club. While the Division I wrestlers competed with the support of an athletics department program, Mejia took the mat as a member of the club team, continuing his collegiate career for the opportunity to keep wrestling.
Mejia competed in one of the tournament's deepest weight classes, finishing the day with a 1-2 record. Although he came up short of the podium, he ensured the Fresno State Wrestling Club was represented alongside the university's varsity team.
