The Bulldogs kicked off their season in Las Vegas, battling tough NCWA competition and earning a dual win over USC to place 9th overall at the Western Regional Duals.

Eight Bulldogs battled at the 2017 NCWA National Championships in Allen, Texas. Though none reached All-American status, the experience hardened a young team that continues to build its legacy—despite big changes on the horizon.

A forgotten set of singlets, banged-up starters, and a day full of emotion couldn’t stop the Fresno State Wrestling Club from punching eight tickets to nationals at the 2017 NCWA West Coast Conference Championships in Bullhead City, Arizona.

With the return of NCAA Division I wrestling on the horizon, the Fresno State Wrestling Club focused on the present—winning a third straight NCWA California State Championship title in front of a home crowd on February 11.

The Super Sunday Invitational saw a last-minute format change from duals to individual brackets, catching the Fresno State squad off guard. Still, the Bulldogs adapted—and even saw a pleasant surprise, as senior Jovany Gonzalez returned to action and claimed the 165-pound title.

Fresno State went 2–2 at the NCWA Western Regional Dual Championships, held January 27–28, 2017, at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. The Bulldogs placed sixth overall in the 16-team bracket, while two members of the women’s team—Mai Xiong and Gurleen Chahal—earned third-place finishes in their side tournament brackets.

The Bulldogs took down UC Santa Barbara 26–13 in front of a home crowd at the South Gym. The dual was marked by dominant wins across the board and what could be the final match for club founder Jovany Gonzalez.

The 2016-17 season officially began at the Bill Musick Open on November 5, hosted by Fresno City College, where returning seniors Jovany Gonzalez and Davit Gevorgyan shook off the rust after a year away from competition. Both athletes competed up a weight class in a season-opening test of their health and preparation.

Fresno State Wrestling Club closed out a milestone 2015–16 season at the NCWA National Championships in Kissimmee, Florida, where the Bulldogs crowned their first-ever All-Americans in Mason Temple (165 lbs) and Rossana Aguilar (123 lbs). With ten national qualifiers and program-best performances, the tournament capped off a breakout year that firmly established Fresno State as a contender on the NCWA stage.

Fresno State Wrestling made history at the 2016 NCWA West Coast Conference Championships in Tucson, Ariz., qualifying a program-record ten athletes to the National Championships. With two individual conference champions and strong performances across both the men's and women's teams, the Bulldogs continue to build momentum as they head into the final stretch of the season.
