Bulldogs Tested at Maverick Open
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — November 13, 2021
The Fresno State Wrestling Club traveled to Grand Junction, Colorado, for the Maverick Open, one of the toughest early-season tournaments on the schedule.
Hosted by Colorado Mesa University, the event featured wrestlers from NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NAIA, NJCAA, and NCWA programs from across the country. The Bulldogs welcomed the opportunity to compete against a high level of competition as they continued building experience early in the season.
Tournament Recap
141 lbs — Jerry Coleman
After receiving a first-round bye, Coleman dropped matches to Moses Torres (Wayland Baptist) and Joaquin Mosqueda (Sierra College).
174 lbs — Daniel Hidalgo
Hidalgo fell to NaKoda Siegel (Montana State-Northern) before dropping his consolation match to Gabe Guzman (Sierra College).
197 lbs — David Carrera
Carrera received an opening-round bye before falling to Daemyen Middlebrooks (Northern Colorado). After another consolation bye, his tournament came to a close against Wyatt Hoeppner (Colorado Mesa).
116 lbs — Evelyn Guzman
Guzman fell to Ashley Gooman (University of Providence), Anja Tschohl (Colorado Mesa), Alexis Allen (Colorado Mesa), and Jasmin Soc-Lopez (Ottawa Arizona).
143 lbs — Grace Her
Her received a first-round bye before falling to Leanna Souza (Wayland Baptist). She battled back with victories over teammate Amaya Castillo and Morgan Mackey (University of Providence) before her tournament came to a close against Sadie Foreman (Wayland Baptist) and Lily McKaig (Colorado Mesa).
143 lbs — Amaya Castillo
Castillo dropped her opening match to Samantha Tuttle (Ottawa Arizona). After a consolation bye, she was eliminated by teammate Grace Her.
