Bulldogs Sweep Quad Duals, Women’s Team Makes Statement with First Victory

FRESNO, Calif. – November 14, 2015

The Fresno State Wrestling Club turned in a commanding performance at home, sweeping a quad dual meet against Sacramento State, UC Merced, and UC Santa Barbara in front of a lively crowd at the South Gym. The event also marked a milestone for the women’s team, who picked up their first official dual victory in program history.

Fresno State 34, Sacramento State 20

The Bulldogs came out strong in the opening dual, dominating the lightweight and heavyweight classes. Fresno State wrestlers picked up bonus-point wins across those brackets, quickly building a lead that Sacramento State couldn’t close. The middleweights proved to be more competitive, with the Hornets securing a couple of key victories. However, Fresno State’s depth on the ends of the lineup proved too much to overcome.

Fresno State 42, UC Merced 11

In the second dual of the day, Fresno State nearly completed a clean sweep of UC Merced, dropping just two matches. The team controlled the pace and tempo in nearly every bout, with improved mat wrestling and awareness on display. From early takedowns to dominant finishes, the Bulldogs showcased just how much growth they’ve made since last season.

Fresno State 15, UC Santa Barbara 9

The final dual of the day presented a unique scenario. UC Santa Barbara arrived without a full lineup, and Fresno State had the opportunity to secure a lopsided win through forfeits alone. However, in the spirit of competition, the Bulldogs chose to forgo those forfeits and instead adjusted their lineup to ensure actual matches could be wrestled.

The team bumped multiple athletes up one or two weight classes to create legitimate matchups. The Bulldogs went on to win a head-to-head match up dual, securing the dual victory without relying on a single forfeit. Had they taken the forfeits, the dual would have been mathematically over before the first whistle. Instead, the team showed a willingness to challenge itself and continue growing.

Lineup for the day included:

  • 133 lbs – Eric Loredo

  • 141 lbs – Alejandro Politron

  • 149 lbs – Christopher Dela Cruz

  • 157 lbs – Greg Garrison

  • 165 lbs – Omar Benavides

  • 174 lbs – Cameron MacLeod

  • 184 lbs – Jarette Suikowsky

  • 197 lbs – Jesus Izazaga

  • 235 lbs – David Gallardo

  • 285 lbs – Jesus Marez-Lopez

Women’s Team Recap vs UC Merced

In a historic moment for the program, the Fresno State women’s team earned their first-ever dual meet victory with a 30–0 shutout over UC Merced. The lineup featured a mix of byes and dominant finishes.

  • Andrea Garcia and Jessica Garcia both received byes at 101 lbs and 109 lbs, respectively.

  • Mai Xiong, who weighed in at 109 lbs, bumped up to 116 lbs and scored a pin to kick off the match.

  • Sabrina Sandoval (130 lbs) and Rossana Aguilar (136 lbs) each delivered pinfall victories to secure the sweep.
