Martino Reaches Finals at Bill Musick Memorial Open
FRESNO, Calif. — November 5, 2022
The Fresno State Wrestling Club officially opened the 2022-23 season at the Bill Musick Memorial Open, hosted at Fresno City College.
Returning NCWA All-American Nicholas Martino highlighted the day for the Bulldogs, advancing to the championship match at 157 pounds. Along the way, Martino defeated Jacob Byrd (Vanguard Unattached) before knocking off reigning CCCAA 157-pound State Champion Noah Cortez (Fresno City) to earn a spot in the finals.
Awaiting him was current No. 1-ranked CCCAA wrestler Jackson Morgan of Fresno City. The championship bout remained competitive early as Martino repeatedly attacked Morgan's legs, but the Fresno City wrestler's unorthodox scrambling ability prevented several scoring opportunities. As the match wore on and Martino was forced to open up his offense while trailing, Morgan capitalized to pull away for the title.
The remainder of the Bulldogs gained valuable early-season experience as Fresno State continued preparing for its upcoming conference dual schedule.
